Side Effects of Central Sleep Apnea

The side effects that you experience from obstructive Sleep Apnea are similar to the ones that you experience from central Sleep Apnea. In both cases you have a period of not breathing that occurs while you sleep. Again, there can be a single episode or literally hundreds during the night. The health risks are the same, right from increased drowsiness to increased risk of heart attack and other fatal conditions. The main difference between obstructive Sleep Apnea and central Sleep Apnea is that the former is a physical condition and the latter has mental origins.

What Triggers Central Sleep Apnea?

Central Sleep Apnea is trigged by a reaction in your brain while you sleep. Normally a small part of your brain stays awake the entire time you are sleeping. It tells the body to keep breathing. However, if someone is suffering from central Sleep Apnea their entire brain virtually shuts off during sleep. This includes the part that reminds them to keep on breathing. Without this neurological sign the lungs will stop working long enough for an apnea session to occur. Only when your blood oxygen level dips perilously low that the brain “wakes up” and gives the lungs the proper signal to breathe again.

 

Is There a Cure for Obstructive Sleep Apnea or Central Sleep Apnea?

Currently there is no cure for either obstructive Sleep Apnea or central Sleep Apnea. Sometimes these two conditions are found simultaneously in the same person. Then it is called mixed Sleep Apnea. The only clue doctors have to finding a cure for these two types of diseases is the fact that when a patient is suffering from mixed Sleep Apnea, a physical fix of obstructive Sleep Apnea will also lessen the central Sleep Apnea episodes.

Main Differences Between OSA and CSA

Thus the main difference between Central Sleep Apnea and Obstructive Sleep Apnea is that while in OSA there is an obstruction of the air way in one or different locations, the CSA condition occurs due to brain ceases to command the body to breathe for sometimes while you are sleeping. CSA is less common than OSA and can have devastating effects leading to tiredness during day time activities, and short pauses of breathing several times during night.
